SUPRISE AIRPORT PROPOSAL
For starters, my fiancé, Nathan, and I have been in a long distance relationship for most of our relationship. We started dating March 30, 2017 and we were only together for the first two months - the rest has been long distance. I'm in grad school in Virginia and he is in a band in Nashville, Tennessee. However, our proposal on January 6th, 2018 was at BWI airport in Maryland. Nathan's family lives close to that airport so when I go home to see my family in Massachusetts, I drive from Virginia to Maryland and leave my car at his family's house and fly out of that airport because its typically cheaper. I had been home with my family for the holidays for three weeks and the week leading up to it was like any normal week. On the day of the proposal, I was flying back from Boston to Maryland and for all I knew, Nathan was in Nashville. Nathan's brother was supposed to pick me up from the airport and his brother told me the night before that he wanted to go to brunch with me and their sister after he picked me up. I lugged my luggage up the escalator and walked our the front door looking for Nathan's brother's car, when out of the corner of my eye Nathan appears out of nowhere. I was freaking out! I didn't even think he was going to propose, I thought it was just a surprise visit. But then amidst the hugging and excitement, I felt him grab something out of his jacket pocket and when I was all like 'Why are your here?" he said, "Well, I have a question for you!" and he got down on one knee and simply asked, "Will you marry me, Hales?" I said a resounding "YES!" and grabbed his face and kissed him. It was seriously so magical. (proposal photographed by Craig Harris & Branches Wedding Co)
We met through mutual friends. He moved from Maryland to Virginia to go to the same school as me and to be closer to the members of his band. The first time he saw me was in the school dining hall and he said he started liking me from that point on! Months later, he asked me on a coffee date and I liked talking to him but just didn't feel anything romantically for him. In the fall of 2016, we hung out a lot. My roommates and and I last minute wanted to throw a Christmas party so he spent all day with me stringing lights on our house and decorating. He was just so constant and became really special to me. A month later, he told me he liked me and we spent a few months basically hashing it out and talking and learning more about each other. On March 30 2017, we started dating.
I think my favorite thing is just that we are each other's "person." He is my safe place and I'm his. We just get each other even when we can have completely opposite personalities in certain ways. Because of that, we know how to love each other really well and consistently - through humor, affection and time spent together.
SHORT. As short as possible. We are still trying to find a date but I'm just so ready to start life with him!
On our first initial date a year and a half before we officially started dating, I had no idea that I would end up marrying that guy. So I guess it was a happy surprise! But honestly, a week into dating him I said to myself, "I've got to marry him" and there was just no going back!
Choosing a ring was actually a long process for us. we were on a budget but didn't want to sacrifice the way the ring made us feel or the excitement it brings. I've always loved gold rings, the oval cut with also a simplistic look. I basically had sent Nathan lots of options and then told him to choose whichever one he felt best about when he pictured getting down on one knee and asking that question. So after that, the ball was in his court and he ended up picking my favorite option - the Evelyn ring but he customized it to not have the stones around the band, which is what I love! He paid great attention.
I initially heard about Olive Ave in an Instagram giveaway! All of my friends and I were trying to win and through that we became obsessed with the company! Seriously considering using "Olive" as a middle name for a baby girl one day haha!
